“When given the choice between being right or being kind, choose kind.” ― Dr. Wayne W. Dyer
I’ve been thinking a lot about how to let go of resentments recently. Letting go of the past, and allowing old wounds to heal – forgiving myself and others for past mistakes. Intellectually, I get it – but emotionally it feels impossible to stop feeling the anger, or the hurt caused by things done in the past that cannot be changed. I need to move on. Let it all go.
So when I heard Rudolph the Red-Nose Reindeer recently, it was like hearing it for the first time! I heard it differently this time. All my life I thought the lesson was that whatever makes you weird – whatever makes you a misfit, or an outcast – can become your greatest blessing in the future. Like the ugly duckling. Get picked on now, but you’ll be rewarded later. That’s a good lesson too. But I missed the real lesson my entire life!
The lesson is that Rudoph had every reason to hold onto resentment, and refuse to help Santa and his reindeers out of bitterness and spite. But he didn’t. They laughed and called him names! They never let poor Rudolph join in any reindeer games… his entire life! Now they come to him because of the fog, and they now need his weird nose that they made fun of all this time? What about all those years of teasing, bullying, and excluding?
We miss how difficult the decision must have been for Rudolph because the song just glances over it. Santa asks Rudolph to help, and “Then how reindeer loved him.”
I asked myself, “What if Rudolph was bitter and resentful like me?” He wouldn’t have gone down in history, that’s for sure! At least not in a good way. 😂 It was because Rudolph was much wiser than me. He knew that what he really wanted was to be accepted and loved by the group. To be a contributing member of the community. He knew to let the past go. He chose to forgive and willingly helped when it was asked of him. That’s why he’s remembered now as the most famous reindeer of all. “Then how the reindeer loved him, as they shouted out with glee, ‘Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer
You’ll go down in history!’”
