I get this question a lot, believe it or not, and I think it’s a question that many pet owners have had. How often should I wash my dog? Although this question was asked by a YouTuber about her Toy Poodle, the answer actually applies to all breeds. So I thought I’d share our conversation because it’s a great question, and I wanted to provide an equally great answer 🙂

How often should I bathe my toy poodle? Should I blow dry his hair, let it air dry or towel dry it?

How to Comb Out Tangles and Matted Hair
thedoggroomer2012:
+Cynthia Rincon I believe in brushing more and bathing less. I would recommend brushing the coat at least once a day, or do a very thorough comb out at least once a week. Bathing should be done no more than once a month because the normal keratinization cycle (skin cell’s life cycle) lasts 21 days (3 weeks). That way we allow the skin a full cycle before washing it again. As far as drying goes, it’s really your preference. Letting the coat air dry takes the longest and it doesn’t look good after it’s finally dry, but it is the healthiest option for the skin. Towel drying is basically the same thing. Blow drying the hair gives you the best finish (soft and fluffy), but you must be careful not to overheat the skin. Keep the blow dryer moving and don’t dwell on one area for too long. Thank you so much for this great question! I hope that my answer is clear and it is helpful. I really appreciate you watching our video!
Weekly, Been breeding and showing poodles and bichons for years. The coats are hair….

That’s actually true as well, you can wash them weekly as long as you’re using a quality conditioner to replace the oils back into the skin and coat. I would suggest brushing more and washing them every 3 weeks to promote the healthiest skin, but I know that show Poodles do get bathed weekly – sometimes more before a show. However, for the common pet, I believe it is much better to wash and condition them monthly. 🙂

Hey! I know this is kinda off topic nevertheless I’d figured I’d ask. Would you be interested in trading links or maybe guest writing a blog article or vice-versa? My blog discusses a lot of the same subjects as yours and I believe we could greatly benefit from each other. If you’re interested feel free to shoot me an e-mail. I look forward to hearing from you! Fantastic blog by the way!
