Nothing frustrates pet owners more than having their beloved pet shaved down by the groomer, and likewise, nothing frustrates the groomer more than having to deal with a tangled or overblown coat. It seems that the issue is not isolated to one area, but a common complaint by both groomers and pet owners all over the world. The solution to this issue is provide helpful information to the pet owners on the importance of proper maintenance in between haircuts. As professional groomers, we can provide grooming options tailored to the pet owners’ needs such as a weekly brushing/combing service. It’s amazing what a proper brushing will do for a dog’s coat:

It is not reasonable to expect a groomer to be able to perform the carding and de-matting techniques you see in these videos in a single session. I know from personal experience that it takes too much time, and there is a bit of discomfort from both sides when it comes time to calculate the charges for the time taken. The best option, in my opinion, is for the pet owner to comb and brush their dogs’ coats on a regular basis in between visits to the professional groomer. I’ve had many clients who could not maintain their dogs’ coats properly for many valid reasons, and I believe that the best option for these cases is for the professional groomer to set up a weekly/bi-weekly brushing session to maintain the coat for them.
Sometimes life gives us a set of circumstances and we are unable to properly maintain the coat ourselves, and we cannot afford to pay someone to do it either. In these cases, unfortunately, we must shave the matted coat off and start over. “Humanity before vanity” is the groomer’s creed, and although we would love for the dog to look cute, sometimes the most humane option is to shave and start over.

I completely understand how you feel. Sometimes I would see a lightbulb go off while I’m explaining it to them, but then the next time it’s like we never had the conversation. So I’ll explain it again and see the same lightbulb light up above their head until the next time they come in. It’s like they’re not really listening. However, there are those few who really get it and make the necessary changes in their lives to take care of their pets properly. Those are the ones we are after, the people who really listen – the ones that never listen will never change.

I too am pretty much computer illiterate, but I’ve been getting much better these days. It doesn’t require a “massive” amount of work, but it does require time and commitment. I’ve only recently really gotten involved with blogging because I’m starting to understand it better. I’d say that as long as you have a message to deliver, and it’s something you’re passionate about, running a blog is actually very fun and therapeutic 🙂 I personally believe that the content is more important than the layout & design, but that is not to say that the layout & design doesn’t matter. I does help when something is packaged nicely, but in the end, I think that sharing information that is relevant, practical and helpful is the best way to grow an audience.
